This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

hey saw a 14% increase in their stock. I and many others have 401K plans, retirement plans, and our own investments that are connected to oil stock prices. This HELPED millions.

I agree.

I don't get how oil profits is a bad thing. I just don't see it.

Nobody seems to care that International Paper earnings jumped 20% - nor countless other businesses. So why are oil profits a bad word?

Talk about, greed. Check out how much they pay in taxes. I have not checked this Qs #s but I looked at their 2007 statements, their profit 40 billion, their taxes 101 billion, with 29 going straight to the IRS at 42% tax rate. They only made 10 cents on every dollar. If our brilliant congressional leaders call this a windfall, our country is in a world of hurt. This is one of those instances where those who are squawking the most, are gaining the most and their are simply diverting attention.

Just like the fact of the budget deficit, tax revenues have set records for the past 3 years, but you do not see the AP reporting this. The records revenues are exactly would should happen when you lower taxes (Econ 101). But we have had record spending on Social programs and the govt continues to grow out of control, and they blame the tax cuts for them not having enough money.

The problem is congress, that is what has to change. Either they are idiots or they are liars. I do not want people working for me that fit into either of these.

The only thing worse than corporate greed, is govt greed and it is running wild in DC. If they are getting the job done, fire them.

Glad you still have a 401K James? You should be! Most have spent theirs to keep from losing houses. While you are happy, 10's of Millions are being raked over the coals by Exxon (a company that Never seems to see any reason to lower gas prices, even as the barrel drops by 20%).

What the FFFF is up with this crap?! No one with money invested in oil is having a problem with this issue EVERYONE else does! BUT, you Oilers should as well, because all of your profits on the stocks are going into your own gas and oil tanks! You're not making money you're just breaking even (UNLESS of course you are well enough off to not have issues regardless of the economy).

      FOOLS!

These companies need to be threatened with a huge loss by kicking them out of this country unless they restrain themselves from robbing the poor to give to the RICH!

Go count your money James and STFU!

      Shan-Man,
That is some serious anger you have. I own some of that stock. 11 shares. I know its a whoppin $900 investment but I'm glad they posted a profit, that shows that the company is solid and will continue to provide gas at the pump ($3.75 in Iowa right now). But here are two facts that most people won't hear: 1. XOM missed profit estimates by a quarter and the shares are down $2.50. XOM invested 7.1 BILLION dollars in exploration. That is 40% of their profits invested in the future. That 7.1 BILLION pays for thousands of jobs.

      I AM ANGRY!

But, the unbearable facts still remain.

I also believe that the 11.7B in profit is after any incurred expenses. Therefore the 7.1B split into QTRs (call that 1.8B) would be added into that 11.7B for 13.5B total.

Isn't exploration considered a 'capital expenditure' so wouldn't it be counted before the bottom line and not as an expenditure of the profit?
Besides as the AP article 'IMPACT: Big Oil profits steered to investors' by John Porretto on July 21, 08 described more of the actual 'profits' are sent to the investors and used by the companies themselves to buy back their own stocks. "The five biggest international oil companies plowed about 55 percent of the cash they made from their businesses into stock buybacks and dividends last year, up from 30 percent in 2000 and just 1 percent in 1993, according to Rice University's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy."

It seems that there may be a lot of money left over. If the exploration is already considered part of doing business then my question is who is getting the 45% difference in profits? Hmmmm.?

Hey James in case you didn't notice, Disney took a bit of a beating in the last quarter.
HM? I wonder why? Oh, I remember now. BECAUSE IT COST A FORTUNE TO BUY THE GAS YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR FAMILY ON ANY KIND OF VACATION.

America is going down the fiscal crapper and its the oil companies that are holding the handle. And if you have not the brains to figure out that charging $4.00 a gallon while making 12 BILLION dollars profit a year is not only greedy but also reckless and damaging to the rest of the country's financial stability then you sir are... I agree with Terry in SC and Shan-man. I think the oil companies KNOW they are exploiting us because they deny their price increases have anything to do their own profits. They blame supply dearth and American dependency. But I think we can now see that these excuses are BS.

but... whatever. I think it's wonderful that the American public is being forced to reduce oil dependency... it's just a shame that the oil companies are benefiting so greatly simultaneously.

                That's a pretty cheap shot.

I think there are just some in this country that realize that supply and demand typically works and that profits are a good thing in the long run.

We are in a slight adjustment period, and sure we are a little high. But when adjusted for inflation, we are "less high" than we were "too low" in the late 90s.

Well I partly agree. But you guys miss a bigger point. The Government are BIGGER THIEVES because they get to keep a MUCH BIGGER PRECENTAGE from every gallon of gas that we buy. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE ON THAT???!!!! Good for EXXON/MOBILE. I rather see them get the money. I would not want to give another penny to this CORRUPT GOVERNMENT. If you're asking why i say this Government is CORRUPT. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE FEDERAL DEPT. My daughter was born a month ago.. Guess what? She's already in dept $30,000+. I find it suspect and glaringly obvious that while the price of a barrel of oil is in the $125-140 range that the commensurate rise in gas prices doesn't keep the oil company profits steady, but rather launches them into record profit territory. This is price gouging that they don't even bother to hide anymore. The lunatics are running the asylum here. I'm not an enemy of business, but I am an enemy of avarice. This is the single largest argument I've seen for partial regulation of the oil industry.

Point of Correction. There was no FED decision to waive Exxon's fine in the Valdez oil spill. In fact, a substantial fine was paid.

It was the Supreme Court, a co-equal branch of government, who ruled that the fine imposed was excessive. I did not read the decision, but I would assume that the Court took that position based on the 8th Ammendment in the Bill of Rights. A part of that language reads, "nor excessive fines imposed".

The Framers wrote the Constitution to protect everyone, both large and small. The fact that Exxon is a large corporation does not mean it is not entitled to it's Constitutional Rights.

Lets see 11,660,000,000$minus 200,000,000$a small drop in bucket of their quarterly earnings.
The Alaskan Shorline is still haveing Eco-Problems from that spill. Herr Bush's family has been in oil forever...of course he is gonna kick back to them.
His daddy Bush Sr is working for Sudi Oil Intrests
Dubyah knows when his term is up in Washington ...he will never be allowed to play in the political sandbox again and he is taking advantage of it and using us Regular Joes to make sure he has a job after January by sucking up to big oil and letting them gouge us. I did not vote for Herr Bush either time he ran.
I don't think he is qualified to run a lemonade stand never mind Our Once Great Nation

200M seems like a lot until you read that the number that they were given a mulligan on was 2500M! That is a bigger chunk of their ONE QTR profits. But all of this took over 20 years to finalize and payout funds. These numbers were to be given in the time of the accident's occurence not 20yrs later where the money should be adjusted for inflation as well but was NOT!

The Alaskan's got screwed, but Peter17 doesn't agree with that (I found out in another thread).

TO CONCLUDE, 200M is a drop in the bucket for these slimy Oil CEOs (even on a personal level I would imagine).

With Daddy Bush all buddy-buddy with the Saudis, one has to question the possible conspiracy theories.....perhaps the increase in OPEC's cost per barrel has been (agreeably) inflated to cause this so-called crisis in order to change the American public opinion of the bans on offshore drilling and drilling in Alaska (neither of which will actually improve the current situation, but when you are paying $4 a gallon, it doesn't seem so bad, right?). OPEC guys still make a fortune, and our oil companies get what they have been after for years. Secondly, every problem with the rising costs of all products in our economy can be attributed to the increase in gas prices. How can Exxon have record profits while the public suffers.....shouldn't they be absorbing some of the costs of the increase in oil and not pass all of it (plus future losses) on to the public. I'd like to know what that profit breaks down to in relation to gallons sold. I'd lay money that they are making a $2 per gallon profit.

I am considered a Socialist becuse I believe that profits from our natural resources should be steered towards education and medical programs. Instead the profits are diverted towards lobbying and manipulating our legislation and legislators, towards occupying strategic desert outposts, towards building pipelines through Afghanistan, and towards manipulating free enterprise from ever getting out from under the thumb of big oil. I believe in freedom. Freedom from blood sucking businesses that profit off the peoples resources.

Oh yeah, I am also considered a socialist because I don't believe that the insurance industry should be deciding our health issues, and using profits to manipulate federal and state legislation (for example when the president blocks our freedom to purchase prescription drugs and legislation that blocks almost any attempt for the average citizen to overide the medical decisions the insurance company makes)

I don't feel like I am a Socialist, I feel like an American fighting for freedom from the one's who take advantage of others.

I live in a rural area and am unable to WALK anywhere except to a cow pasture. I guess I could get my milk there. I cannot DRIVE LESS because that would mean I'd be WORKING LESS....there is no one for me to car pool with. I cannot CHOSE to get a solar heater for my pool because..alas....I HAVE NO FREAKIN POOL. I can't afford a pool and don't know many who can...much less a heater for it. Why don't you put yourself in other's shoes instead of being so self righteous and assume the way you do things is the way everyone else can and should do them. If I could do all those things to save money I would. A lot of people can't. So don't give us lip when we're upset about rising fuel costs that are making it hard for us to go to work to earn money that will go into someone else's pocket at Exxon while we fuel up to go to work again.

To save money I CHOSE to install solar panels for my pool heater.

I can't afford a pool or solar panels. I save money by staying home. No going out to resturants, no taking drives up the shore, and no family Disney vacation.

How is that market not a Monopoly? There is hardly ANY competition they all scratch each other back (Including Big Bush and Jr). If they lose money OR threaten that they could possibly, Big Bro steps in and protects them.

THEY ARE NOT TREATED THE SAME AS OTHER BUSINESSES in this free market! They would be threatened if we kicked them out! How much would that cost them & what compromise would they make to stay here?

It is easy to call exec thieves....especially when some get paid 22,000,000$ a year.
That is crazy...and plain outright WRONG.

I feel your pain about not having a pool for any solar heaters. I have NO JOB because the major bank I worked for decided that people overseas (job was outsourced) could do the job cheaper. (trained computer work, can't say anymore than that)
I have no more 401K because I had to LIVE on something the last year. But at least I cashed it in when I did, even with the fines I had to pay to get my own money back, the total would have been lower now anyway. Yeah, profit is fine, but in a moral way. Not profit making profit itself. Oh and the 'Bank' its doing fine. It was one of those that had the meeting to help the FED last week. yeah profit only profits a few.

Well we all can gripe because some CEO got 22Mil and we got a fraction of that, but if it were any of you getting 22 mil a year - your view might not be the same. Outsourcing jobs is becoming popular because americans demand more than other countries. There is no incentive to keep companies hiring Americans. Or even keep their businesses in America. Raising taxes for business on their profits aren't going to motivate any company to start sharing the wealth. And the funds collected certainly aren't going to help the hardest working.

We don't vote in Congress, James.

We elect the LIARS, then they change faces and start in with their agendas!

There should be a 6 month trial offer on the elected officials to keep them on the straight and narrow paths they told us they would walk!

I have writtien to several congress people and I have not recieved ONE response!

                                    Shan,
I wrote to my Congressman one time..when I did not get a response letter I jumped on my bike and rode to his office(about 15 minute ride from my house).
When I got there his secretary said he was away in Washington.
I asked when he would get back and she told me.
So after he came back I went to that office everyday to ask to see him.
The secretary would not set me an appointment so this was one way to get his attention.

(why I had to go thru it I have no idea..I guess since I did not give him money for his campaign I was not important enough)
Well finally after 5 days of going to his office and sitting there all day...he finally came up to me and asked what I wanted to talk to him about.

The Reason I went to see him was this.
My mother lives in senior housing and she and some of the other ladies in the building are in wheelchairs or have problems walking.
Well right outside the building is a local bus stop.
Now heading one direction all you got to do is walk outside and sit on the bench.
To go the other way you have to walk about 2 blocks to the bus stop.
On sidewalks that are torn up and tough to navigate.
I told him I had approached MBTA and asked them to move the bus stop that is down the street to in front of the building so they would not have to walk so far.
MBTA said no it would cost about 5,000$ to move the bus stop.
I took video of the ladies walking/wheeling to the bus stop and showed it to him.
I also told him of MBTA response to my request.
Now I gotta give him credit...I don't know what he did..but about a week later I seen a crew out installing a bench and moving the bus stop sign.

It just goes to show ya...unless we take control and demand accountability of our Civic Leaders and demand they speak for us instead of going along partylines they will always try to run rough-shod over us normal Joes.

But in my personal opinion he only helped so the next time he comes to this building hosting a re-election party he will have something to point at that directly involves the people here while he begs for their votes.

James the poll that says Americans want drilling is not what was asked. The question had to do with energy independence. To 'me' that is alternate energy, not more oil. Especially no more offshore oil drilling. It was an implied question. Yes, I want energy independence, not more oil. I want alternate renewable energy sources. And, besides, James, the oil companies have plenty of leases currently not being used. They should concentrate on those before drilling elsewhere. Another thing, this supposed oil that 'may' be drilled??? There is no law that says it has to stay here, so it will go on the global market. Americans would have their own environment destroyed so they can stand in line at the oil pump just like any other country. If it truly is our oil, it should stay here. But THEN you have people saying that the world suppliers would just lower their level of supplies to the US. So, to get away from this whole problem, just go alternate renewable energy.

dcstone01. Energy independence means being able to produce enough energy locally so there is no need to purchase it from other countries. These sources can include oil, wind, solar, coal, nuclear, or any other type you can think of. They can include both renewable and nonrenewable.

Anyone who thinks that energy independence does not include drilling locally for oil is living in a dream world. Electricity used to come from wind years ago. The wind does not blow all of the time so there had to be another way to generate the electricity. It is the same with solar power. It is great when the sun is shining but at night when it isn't, how do you power your lights and your computer and all of the other electronics that you have? Various things have been tried and they may even work on a small scale but for the masses they are not feasible. At some point something that is will be developed. In the mean time we can either support drilling for domestic oil or quit whining because gas prices are too high. You can't have it both ways.

I just don't understand. Why is this okay? Why are we paying more attention to whether or not Americans are eating a big mac than we are to the fact that people like me, who work 40+ hours a week to pay my bills.....I heard a politician on the news this morning say that we'll never see $3 a gallon again....we'll be lucky to see it under $4 for much longer. The cost of gas is going up, the cost of food is going up, the cost of nearly everything is going up.....which in turn means sales tax paid is also higher than before. Not the percent amount but the amount actually paid. So explain this to me....why do certain politicians believe that raising taxes will help the economy? Aren't they already getting more taxes out of me just because I'm having to pay more for things than I ever have? I wish someone would explain all this to me so I can understand it....because right now I'm so lost I'm not sure I'll ever find my way again.

Jame, don't you, see, read, hear, listen to anything but your own mind, big oil is already sitting on 68 million acres, already leased, could have started years ago, but they haven't and even if you started drilling today, maybe a break at the pumps, maybe not for 10 years or more. Curious too, where are the refineries coming from?, import from other countries?, as none have been built since 1974.
People are led blindly into drilling, for votes, when all economists, say no. What about an another spill off the coast of California, like exxon had, would shut down the coast.
Forgot one point, drilling dosen't mean there is oil there?

I really hate to constantly repeat myself as on other posts related to this topic. Just because you have the lease DOES NOT mean it's viable or productive. That's the crappiest spin to come out of the Democrats mouths in a while. Let's say I owned acreage and the mineral rights to that acreage. Doesn't mean there's oil or anything else there. I just have to right to look for oil or whatever is there. Leases are bought and sold in tracts like an auction. They have the lease for say 10 years. If they "explore" that lease and come up empty handed they will not drill there again. Why should they? Kinda like getting blood out of a turnip. If they find a viable source they will develop the field.

The spill was a tanker not a drilling platform. Platforms have a zero spill policy and if they had a leak, it would be contained and cleaned up before you knew about it. Think about it, there are hundreds of tankers in and out of bays everyday. When was the last time you heard about a spill from a platform?

Yes it might take 5, 10 or more years to develop certain areas, but you have to start somewhere. There's no short term fix for our energy addiction, but we have to continue to find sources while working on alternative energy sources. Kinda like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

As far as refinery's are concerned why don't you ask our lovely government and the tree huggers they support how come we don't have any new refinery's.

And to answer your question at the end, no it does not mean there is anything there. Geological surveys will show a potential shale or sandstone but you never know until you put a bit in the ground.

And off the point I hate all the screaming and yelling about the big oil conspiracy. Keep in mind that Exxon's margin was only 8.5%. But as large as they are think about all the salaries and benefits they pay out and all the jobs they create. I just feel we are losing our common sense and not fixing this situation with our votes and getting all the idiots out of Washington. Anymore Congress looks like dunce convention.

Your right. We do need to start somewhere. It's just, from my perspective, that I want it to be the right thing to do. Maybe this crap is what we need to get us off the addiction to fossil fuel. And I want things to occur for the right reason. Its like the saying "Don't get married just because your pregnant". Because once your in it your in it. Maybe not the best analogy but I think you know what I mean. Its just so hard when there isn't one, not one, person in public office you feel you can trust. I'm going to bed.

I can't contribute to my 401, I had to cancel my phone service, MY PHONE SERVICE, i work at a hospital that is a service I NEED but can't afford now. I've had to pull my kids from ANY extracurricular activities, they stay home and in the yard now. No summer fun for them! I can't have my older kids visit me , they live 7 hours away, because i can't afford the fu*&ing gas!! But great for you EXXON, I'm so fu*&ing happy that you made 11 billion dollar profit off me this quarter, that makes me feel so good that you'll be able to take your kids to the market for some ice cream, and I hope that your portfolio is working well so you'll be able to retire and hopefully you won't have to work at Walmart as a door greeter. I feel for you. It's to bad that these comments won't go to a single eye that can make a difference and we're all just wasting our fu*&ing breath. These people are nothing more than rapist! It makes me sick and pissed off that I can't afford to LIVE at all because of these go%%amn people!

                                          I agree with James B,

Monopolies are nice ...when you can get em'. All it takes is your man in the white house, the congress in your pocket, a well oiled propaganda machine, the numbing effect of national apathy, provide an appropriate and steady sense of powerlessness , repressed technology, a few well placed alternate fuel tariffs here and there, a greed is good morality, a little political instability now and then somewhere in the middle east, and you got it made. VERY nice work if you can get it.

Excellent post! Humorous, yet to the point without being mean, nasty, or hateful. I can only assume you're not a republican, unlike James B. with his "Let them eat cake" attitude.

And, James B., as far as "I want government out of my life", the very guys YOU voted in to power in 2000 and 2004 have INCREASED the size of the government by 40%, created a national deficit that is LARGER that the deficit of all previous administrations COMBINED, and just sent a RECORD budget to Congress for next year.

One thing I can agree with you on, James B. I want government out of my life too, especially the one that has been in power the last 8 years!

They make a lot because they produce a lot and spend a lot doing it.As a percentage of gross sales their profits are less than google. Oil prices are high because the fed has abandoned the dollar to try and prevent a melt down of the economy by lowering rates.Adjucted for the dollar oil would be $ 90. take away all the rampant speculation driving prices and oil SHOULD be $70.

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE...DO NOT BUY GAS FROM EXXON SUPPLIED STATIONS. this is how a free country works. if you purchase gas from them, then YOU are supporting their profits. supply and DEMAND changes things, not how we FEEL about them!

You're free to purchase any brand of gasoline you chose. If you think EM sells gasoline only through it's branded stations you must live in a cave. Grow up. You want lower prices either reduce the demand or increase the supply.

That's it! We'll just reduce the demand. Let's all go out and buy electric cars. No, wait, they don't make those yet. Well, we could all go out and buy hybrids, but those burn gas to produce electricity and you can't plug them in, and besides that, we can't get the loans we need to buy new cars because the financial system is f'd up and we can't afford them anyway. So what's left? Drive less. That will help but it's not a long term solution.

Here's what driving less means to me. Driving less means a lot of people won't take vacations this year so that stuffs the travel industry. I make my living drawing hotels. When people cut back on traveling, fewer hotels are built and there goes my living.

                                            It's all related.

redthumb - you need to recognize that YOU have CHOICES, and buying an electric car (if ever produced) is not the only one. stop thinking on a microscopic level and start seeing the bigger picture. gasoline is not a monopoly, and neither is the car/travel industry. fact of the matter is, CONSUMERS have the power. by having (more) government step because we don't think something is fair...is lazy, and counterintuitive. how would you feel if your business was told it made too much money and you weren't allowed to charge so much anymore?

I wasn't advocating government regulation, I was trying to point out that the necessary changes cannot be made overnight. I can't go out this afternoon and buy an electric car, nor can I go out and convert my transportation to bio-diesel or whatever alternative fuel at the snap of my fingers. It will take a long time to make the changes, in the meantime we just have to cut back on consumption and that also affects us. Restaurants are closing, DIY stores are hurting as well as most all retail businesses because everyone is having to cut back on other expenses in order to afford what gas they have to buy.

I like your statement in regards to boycotting Exxon Oil......now to the Exxon Employee who thinks that it is about supply and demand. Listen up, your company knows good and well that we have NO supply problem, and that more oil could be placed on the open market. It won't be long until we will be independent from oil both foreign and domestic. Laugh if you want, but there will come a day when the caves will open up for EM execs.

james B, what do you mean "free market", how many ma and pa stores have been shut down due to Walmart 'free market'. There is no free market. Your naive idea that everyone has the opportunity to be able to compete in a free market is as unsound as the practices of these monopolizing companies with monster profits. You said it yourself, YOU'VE had to adjust your means of living due to these peoples 'free market'. Some of us live 15 miles from a store. Some of us don't have a pool to heat with solar panels. The concept of a free market is to be able to offer to people service or goods at a reasonable price. REASONABLE!! There is nothing reasonable about oil and gas prices sky rocketing to the point where I have to adjust every portion of my budget to be able to afford fuel for a vehicle. With no adjustments in wages, with no decline in the price of anything explain to me again your ideology behind your concept of "free market".

Jim, you posting the same stupid message several times perplexes me!

People are going to Wally World because they have no money to go to more expensive local stores. they can get most everything that they need in one place for the cost of one round trip to the store (X miles = X dollars more to the bill).

Why are you finding foult with everyone who is explaining/talking of their plight in our current society that seems to be very lop-sided into 2 (YES I said 2) economic classes, the POOR 80% and the well off 20%. YOU are the minority, so keep stepping so harshly and the 80% will fight like they are backed into a corner.

IN ALL actuality, we ARE in a corner now!
